FORGED ON MELBOURNE ICE. BUILT FOR EVERYONE.
How a grassroots collective of queer skaters challenged traditional sporting culture to build the Southern Hemisphere’s benchmark inclusive tournament based on a single Unified Draft model.
KADE MATTHEWS: ARCHITECT OF THE INCLUSIVE ICE
Kade Matthews founded Queerclash with a singular, uncompromising vision: to dismantle the historic culture of exclusion in Australian ice sports and replace it with a world-class competitive arena where LGBTQIA+ athletes can play at the highest pace without concealing their identity.
Having experienced both the exhilarating speed of hockey and the pervasive locker-room hostility documented in national sports studies, Kade recognized that creating an inclusive tournament required more than surface-level pride tape. It required systemic institutional design — certified zero-tolerance refereeing, structural neurodiversity accommodations, gender-neutral facilities at IceHQ in Reservoir, and the breakthrough Unified Draft format where all players enter together regardless of division.
Under Kade's leadership, Queerclash has expanded from an informal scrimmage into a four-day festival uniting 8 legacy teams, 160 drafted athletes, and raising tens of thousands for youth mental health and trans healthcare advocacy.
"Queerclash is not about asking for permission to be on the ice. It is about proving that radical kindness, authentic diversity, and ferocious athletic competition belong together."
THE EVOLUTION OF QUEERCLASH
The First Open Scrimmage
18 queer skaters gather for a late-night private ice session in Melbourne, establishing the core principles of non-judgmental skill development and radical queer joy.
Adoption of the Unified Draft Model
To eliminate tier segregation and ensure novice athletes skate alongside seasoned competitors, Queerclash formalizes the single open draft pool and establishes the 8 Legacy Clubs.
Queerclash 2027: IceHQ in Reservoir
8 legacy squads, 160 drafted athletes, a state-of-the-art sensory suite, corporate partner sponsors, and a $35,000 community fundraising target across four days at IceHQ in Reservoir.
